Swine Flu Symptoms

Like other strains of influenza, Swine flu has symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Other symptoms may include vomiting and diarrhea. As with seasonal flu, Swine flu can worsen chronic medical conditions. Pneumonia, respiratory failure, and death have been reported by some infected with Swine Flu.

If you are concerned because you are experiencing flu-like symptoms, please call our office at 703-391-2031 and speak to our nursing staff.

How does it spread?

It is typically spread from human-to-human by coughing or sneezing of an infected person. The flu virus may live 2 hours or longer outside the body on surfaces such as desks, chairs, doorknobs, tables, counters, etc.

Tips to help prevent the spread of Swine Flu

Currently there is no vaccine to protect against swine flu. However, taking the following precautions may help to reduce your risk of becoming infected:

  • Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing with a tissue or the inside of your elbow instead of your hand.
  • Frequent hand washing, especially after coughing or sneezing.
  • Alcohol-based hand cleansers may be effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent the spread of germs.

Severe Medical Symptoms

You should seek urgent medical assistance if you are experiencing any of the following:

In Children:

  • Fast breathing or trouble breathing
  • Bluish skin color
  • Not drinking enough fluids
  • Not waking up or not interacting
  • Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
  • Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
  • Fever with a rash

In Adults:

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
  • Sudden dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Severe or persistent vomiting
